Commentary of a U.S. Senator's Response

By Devin Maddox

This letter was sent by Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio in response to Baptist Vision's Associate Director's cooperative e-mail campaign through AFA against the bailout legislation. Italicized comments made in earnest by Devin Maddox. May God be our vindicator.

Dear Mr. Maddox:

"Thank you for getting in touch with me about legislation to promote an economic recovery. I have heard from many Ohioans sharing their ideas for how to best stimulate the economy and which proposals they believe should or should not be included in this legislation. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and suggestions with me."

First, the notion that my e-mail was to object to certain proposals within the bail out legislation is wrong. I am against any bail out legislation that would deepen national debt, give the federal government a precedent to more big government, and cause future hardships for our tax paying people. The reason for contacting Sherrod Brown was to state that this tax payer is against bail out legislation all together.

"Last year the economy shed 2.5 million jobs. We now face the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. The federal government must act to restore confidence in our economy, create jobs, and rebuild our nation’s aging infrastructure. From shrinking retirement funds to high unemployment rates to stagnant wages, Ohioans are facing tremendous economic hardship."

Notice how he states that the "federal government must act", as if there is no other choice but more socialism? Even though most of the financial problems are caused by imposing, if not tyrannical, federal government acts, the solution is more federal government involvement. This would be like going to your neighbor's car and slashing a tire, then when they realize they can't get to work without a new tire, you come along and provide an exact match at a highly inflated price!

Also, notice how the people's "hardships" are mentioned in a way that would guilt trip a tax payer into paying even more taxes in the future and leaving our third and fourth generations to socialism induced poverty. It's not working with this tax payer. The big federal government and their overreaching irresponsibility is to blame, therefore, causing future freedom loss and dependency on the government is not the answer.

"It is important that our approach be timely, targeted, and temporary. Among the fastest and most effective ways to assist Americans in desperate need is by increasing funding for safety net programs, such as those for energy assistance, health care, and nutrition, as well as providing states with the help they need to continue providing necessary services."

Now he wants his state and others to loose their sovereign ability to govern by ensuring federal bail outs to get them out of their troubles. This is more loss of freedom and a total dependency on big government.

This is the order: Big government provides for the states. States provide for the people. People are dependents of the state. All headship rule comes from Washington.

I'd rather have liberty in local government.

Notice the word "programs". Who is in charge of these programs? Are these programs operating free of corruptions and waste?

"Another important step we can take is to invest in our nation’s infrastructure. Studies indicate that not only do these projects create jobs, but every dollar spent on infrastructure adds $1.59 to our economy. Infrastructure projects that improve our roads and water systems and invest in alternative energy and mass transit projects not only help rebuild our state, but promote much needed economic growth. I am working to ensure that these funds are targeted to states like Ohio that have been hardest hit by this economic downturn."

Why does the name Hoover come to mind? This is simply spend your way out of debt philosophy. Sherrod Brown must have graduated from the school of Keynesian economics.

"There is no doubt that our nation is in need of an economic jolt and that middle class families need help. As debate surrounding the economic recovery package continues, I will certainly keep your thoughts in mind."

I doubt that my thoughts are on his mind, but at least a large number of Americans are voicing their opinion. That way when the irresponsible federal government does what it wants against the people's wishes then they will heap to themselves their own destruction.

"...for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." Gal. 6: 7

"Thank you again for being in touch with me."

Maybe the folks in Washington will get "in touch" with the people. Just don't hold your breath.

"Sincerely,
Sherrod Brown"
